"This Kira, J-Kira. Is even more dangerous than the original Kira, Light Yagami, as he's smarter and already knows my face. However I will surely catch him."
"I've never thought, that you'd love Misa Amande, John."
Near is the main antagonist of the first chapter of Death Note 2: The One Who Won. He's L's successor and has build a reputation over the years, as the best detective in the world and as one of the smartest people over all in the world. Bored with the lack of interesting cases to solve, he's filled with joy, when a new Kira starts killing criminals. He's even more joyful, when noticing that there are six Kiras. Near takes on the Kira case, to prove, that he's much more better than the original L.
Near has still the same appearance, although he's now much taller than he was, when he solved the original Kira case. And although he solved the original Kira case, he doesn't feel like he's the real winner, since it was Mello and Mikami failing to obey Kiras commands, that allowed him to win.
Determined to solve the new Kira case, he is much more cunning, manipulative and more willing to cross the line than ever. It makes him the biggest enemy of the new Kira, or as Near calls him J-Kira. Now being on his one, with only the SPK and the japanese Task Force (later only the SPK) as his allies, he begins investigating.
Unlike L, Near investigates from afar, watching over the Kira case, never making personal contacts with the suspects. He only meets J-Kira face to face, at the end and finale of the first chapter, where he meets his death at the hands of J-Kira, who mocks him, calling him a failure, while Near, now controlled by the Death Note is forced to slit his own throat, thus failing to prove anything at all.
